Project Description
This
project, anticipated for construction this spring/summer of 2015, will enhance the existing, marked crosswalk on the east approach of the Broadway and Riverside Avenue intersection. The crossing
will receive the installation of Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFB), the
first such installation in the City of Santa Cruz. The RRFB uses rectangular-shaped
high-intensity LED-based indications, flashing in a wig-wag “flickering”
pattern, and has been shown to increase yielding by vehicles over standard round
beacons. The RRFB is pedestrian
activated (push button) and is mounted between the pedestrian crossing and arrow signs. This location will have a bi-directional layout with signs and beacons on both sides of each pole. Please note that solar RRFB will be used wherever possible.
The crosswalk will also receive new retroreflective yellow-green signing,
and a LED streetlight directly above it.
